Woodear mushrooms are thought to look like ears growing out of trees, hence the name. Often confused with the cloud ear, this mushroom is sometimes known as tree ear and black fungus. The woodear has a firm skin with a slightly crunchy texture and a mild, earthy flavor. Served often in Asian soups, woodear are often called for in recipes for pork or other meats.
